The Cochin University of Science & Technology is a new University established by reorganizing the University of Cochin.
This reorganization was intended to convert it into a full-fledged Science & Technology University of unitary type for the promotion of post-graduate studies and advanced research in applied Science, Technology, Industry and Management.
Cochin University of Science & Technology is not of the affiliating type. It has its own Departments/Schools of study and recognized research institutions. The Departments of the University keep close liaison with industry and R & D organizations. The students spend a semester/two semesters partly or fully, in such organizations to complete their project work.
The major Departments of the University are Applied Chemistry, Applied Economics, Computer Science, Electronics, Environmental Studies, Industrial Fisheries, Marine Sciences, Mathematics, Management Studies, Physics, Polymer Science and Rubber Technology, School of Engineering, Foreign Languages, Law and Hindi. Apart from these, the University has Centres for National Man-power Information, Sponsored Research and Consultancy Services and Computer Centre with state of the art computational facilities.
The University has already developed a distinct and unique culture of training highly qualified scientific and technical manpower at advanced levels, generally outside the educational efforts of other institutions in the state. Plans have been worked out to further consolidate the existing Departments and Schools and to establish new centers of research in some of the frontier and emerging areas of science and technology.

The Department of Electronics was instituted in the year 1975. This is envisaged as a postgraduate department in Master's degree and Ph.D. programmes in frontier fields of Electronics. The M.Tech. programme conducted by Department is supported by All India Council for Technical Education ( AICTE) and University Grants Commission(UGC). Digital Electronics and Radar & Microwave Electronics are offered as specializations for this course
The Doctoral programmes in this Department are mainly in the fields of Signal processing, Pattern Recognition, Microwave Propagation and Antennas, Display Devices, Microprocessor Applications and Underwater Acoustics/Ocean Electronics etc.. External agencies like CSIR, ISRO, DST, DRDO, DoE, etc. are extending support through various projects and fellowships. The Department has well equipped Microwave, Electronic Instrumenation, Microprocessor and Ocean Electronics laboratories. The following three centers in advanced research,
(i) Cochin University Centre for Ocean Electronics (CUCENTOL),
(ii) Centre for Research Electromagnetics & Antennas (CREMA)
(iii) Centre for Research in Microprocessor Applications (CRMA)
have been started with the financial support from Ministry of Human Resource Development, University Grants Commission and other Government of India funding agencies.
In 1988, the UGC has sanctioned COSIST assistance to the Department for the development of postgraduate education and research.
From 1990, the Department offers an M.Sc. degree course in Electronic Science. This course was sponsored by the UGC and the Department of Electronics (Govt. of India).
In 1994, the Department has been selected under the DRS programme of UGC. The thrust area identified for DRS programme is Ocean Electronics.
Effective from 2000, the Department is receiving assistance under the Special Assistance Programme of the University Grants Commission at the DSA level.
